Coupon math is dowright crazy. Why? Because, at times, it leads you to believe you are actually saving money. But are you really? Let's take a look at the new 20th Century Fox movie, Rio, due to be released tomorrow on DVD and Bluray. I admit to grabbing a coupon from time to time. But this one has "coupon math".

The original MSRP for the Bluray/DVD/DC version of this movie is $39.99. I've never payed full MSRP for any movie....ever. Most retailers are selling them for between $19.99 to $26.99, and that is the standard range at most retailers for the initial BD/DVD release.

Rio has some special coupon incentives attached to it. Two major deals are a $3.00 off coupon from Applebees (purchase required as it is on the kid's menu) and a $10.00 off coupon from CVS (required $30.00 purchase of qualifying Proctor and Gamble products). Here is how one coupon wizard describes the process to save money:

Really? Notice she says, it's "like paying $6.99 after coupons."

Is it...really? So let's break it down.

1. Purchase is required at Applebees and CVS. The average total kids meal at ABees is about $7, and you already know you have to purchase $30 worth of P & G crap to get $10. So, the initial payout is, at least, $37.00. (not to mention gas and time if you don't have an ABees or CVS close, but that's another factor in the equation I could use, but won't.)

2. So let's take the $3.00 and the $10.00 and substract it from the price of the movie, $19.99, and that does indeed take us to $6.99 for the movie.

3. But, actual math says you had to spend, at least, $37.00 to get $13.00. Meaning that you spent in the plus $24.00 to get a $6.99 BD/DVD. Which means you took your kid to a crappy restaurant, and bought $30 worth of crap you probably didn't need, $24.00 + $6.99 for a total of $30.99 for a movie.

That's coupon math.
